Dr. Tabbye Chavous is a professor of education in the Marsal School of Education and a professor of psychology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

Hailing from Aiken, South Carolina, Dr. Chavous completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia and earned a Ph.D. in Community Psychology. She began her academic career at the University of Michigan as an assistant professor and advanced to full professor. 

During her tenure at U-M, Dr. Chavous has held various leadership roles including Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion & Chief Diversity Officer, Director of the of the National Center for Institutional Diversity and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. She has been instrumental in integrating access, diversity, equity, and inclusion into institutional practices and policies across various roles. Her leadership at the University of Michigan extended to associate vice president for research and associate dean for academic programs and initiatives in the Rackham Graduate School, among others.

Dr. Chavous’ research focuses on social identity development among Black adolescents and young adults, achievement motivation in ethnic minority students, and the effects of diversity climates in educational settings. As co-director and co-founder of the Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context, she emphasizes the positive development of Black youth and families through research and training.

In teaching, Dr. Chavous addresses developmental, psychological, cultural, and organizational processes related to education and youth development, engaging students across multiple disciplines. Her commitment to student mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration marks a significant aspect of her career.

Dr. Chavous’ contributions to academia extend beyond research and teaching, as she’s frequently consulted on efforts to promote access, participation, and retention in higher education, particularly in STEM fields. Her leadership and scholarly work have had both national and international impact, demonstrating her dedication to broadening educational access and fostering inclusive environments across educational institutions.
